ProWritingAid vs Grammarly

ProWritingAid vs Grammarly: Key Differences

These are both grammar and style checkers, but they are built for different kinds of writing. Grammarly is the quick, everywhere tool: it corrects mistakes as you type, explains each fix and can also rewrite and generate text. ProWritingAid is the deep-analysis tool, with more than 25 reports on things like pacing, repetition and sentence variety, and it leans toward people writing books. The length and type of what you write should decide this.

ProWritingAid reads your manuscript like an editor

Its six reviewers, all on YouTube, praise the depth above all. They describe detailed reports on overused words, cliches, sentence structure and pacing, genre-specific feedback for fiction, and a newer manuscript analysis that looks at story, characters, setting and plot structure. They also like that you can customize which feedback appears and that it supports several varieties of English.

Paid plans add a custom style guide, terminology management, author comparison and daily Chapter Critiques. Premium Plus adds live workshops with authors and editors, an on-demand workshop library and community features such as cowriting sprints.

The price of all that depth is complexity. Reviewers call the interface overwhelming, mention a steep learning curve and slow performance, and say the Google Docs integration can be glitchy. Its plagiarism checking is also described as limited.

Grammarly is the faster, simpler checker

Grammarly's 12 reviewers, again all on YouTube, describe fast, reliable grammar and spelling checks with clear explanations you can learn from. They like that it follows you into browser tabs, Word, Outlook, Google Docs and email, and several call it ideal for business and academic writing. The Pro plan adds full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustment, plagiarism and AI-text detection, and a much larger allowance of AI prompts. Enterprise adds data controls such as bring-your-own-key encryption and data loss prevention.

The complaints are about cost and trust. Reviewers find the premium plan expensive and the free version limited, say it sometimes flags correct text or suggests robotic changes, and raise privacy concerns. One reviewer warns that leaning on it can stop you learning grammar yourself.

What each free tier and paid plan gets you

Both have free plans. ProWritingAid's free tier caps you at 500 words, so it works more as a trial than a working tool. Reviewers describe Grammarly's free version as enough for casual users. On the monthly figures in our data, Grammarly Pro is the cheaper paid entry, but ProWritingAid also sells lifetime plans, and one reviewer argues those one-time purchases make it the cheaper option over time.

ProWritingAid has only 6 reviews so far, too few to name a reviewer favorite here. Pick ProWritingAid if you edit long fiction and want reports to study; pick Grammarly if you want quick corrections everywhere you type.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose ProWritingAid if...

You write books or other long manuscripts and want detailed reports on pacing, repetition, cliches and sentence variety rather than quick fixes. You are willing to spend time learning a dense interface to get that depth. A lifetime plan, or the workshops and chapter critiques on Premium Plus, appeals to you more than another monthly subscription.

Choose Grammarly if...

You want fast corrections wherever you type, in email, documents and browser tabs, with a clear explanation for each fix. You mostly write business, academic or everyday material rather than fiction, and plagiarism and AI-text detection on the paid plan would be useful. Larger organizations can also look at its enterprise data controls.
